Understanding Proxy Session IDs

A session id in your proxy credential pins an exit IP. Here is how it works, why per-worker sessions matter, and how to mint a fresh IP deliberately.

If you have ever looked at a proxy username and seen something like a numeric suffix, you have met a session id. It is the mechanism that turns a rotating pool into a controllable one, letting you decide how long a given identity lasts.

Understanding it removes a lot of guesswork from automation.

What a session id does

A rotating gateway picks an exit IP for each request by default. Adding a session identifier to the username changes that: as long as the same session value is present, the gateway resolves it to the same exit IP.

The session is a label, not a stored credential. Two requests with the same label land on the same address; two requests with different labels are free to land on different addresses. That is the entire contract, and it is enough to build both sticky and rotating behaviour from one endpoint.

Why this matters

Without session control you have two bad options. Rotate every request, which breaks anything stateful, or hold one IP for everything, which concentrates load and burns the address. Session ids let you match continuity to the unit of work.

Concretely:

  • A login flow should use one session from start to finish, so the destination sees one consistent visitor.
  • A list of independent product pages can use a new session each, spreading the work.
  • Parallel workers each need their own session, or they will collide on one address and silently reduce your effective concurrency.

That last point is the most common mistake. Ten threads sharing a session token do not get ten IPs. They get one.

Rotating and holding deliberately

Two operations cover almost everything.

Hold. Keep the same session value for the duration of a unit of work. The address stays put.

Rotate. Change the session value. The next request resolves to a different address.

Rotating is therefore explicit rather than incidental, which is a good property. When an endpoint fails, you mint a new session and move on. When it works, you keep it and continue. That pattern is described in Proxy Rotation Explained.

How LightningBytes applies it

LightningBytes endpoints apply sticky sessions automatically: every generated endpoint carries its own session value, so each row in the generator resolves to a distinct exit IP. That is why requesting ten endpoints gives you ten different addresses rather than ten credentials pointing at the same one.

It also means regenerating an endpoint mints a fresh exit IP even when you only ask for one, because the session value changed. That behaviour is deliberate and is the mechanism behind the per-row Replace action we describe under Sticky sessions.

The practical result: you get rotation by generating new sessions, and stickiness by reusing one, without touching separate configurations.

Choosing a session lifetime

There is no universally correct duration, but there is a good default: make the session as long as the task needs and no longer.

Sessions that outlive their usefulness accumulate requests on one address, which is precisely the concentration you use a pool to avoid. Sessions that are too short break stateful flows. Match the lifetime to the work:

  • Login and checkout: the duration of the flow.
  • A paginated crawl of one section: the section.
  • Independent reads: one request per session.

If your provider enforces a maximum session lifetime, design around it rather than being surprised by a mid-flow change.

Verifying a session actually holds

The only way to know is to look at the exit IP on repeated requests. Send several requests with the same session and confirm the address does not change, then change the session and confirm it does.
