4G, 5G, and LTE Mobile Proxies Explained

What the cellular generations actually mean for a mobile proxy: address assignment, latency profiles, and why the label tells you less than the carrier does.

Mobile proxy listings often lead with a generation: 4G, LTE, 5G. It sounds like a meaningful quality differentiator, and it partly is, but not in the way the marketing implies.

Here is what actually varies, and what to check instead.

The terms, briefly

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, and it is the technology behind what most networks market as 4G. In practice, LTE and 4G refer to the same generation.

5G is the successor generation, with higher theoretical throughput and lower latency, though real-world performance depends heavily on deployment, spectrum and load.

For proxy purposes, the generation label describes the radio access technology the connection uses. It says nothing directly about the trust of the address, which comes from the carrier ASN and the shared nature of carrier-grade NAT. We cover that in Why Mobile IPs Carry the Highest Trust.

What matters more than the generation

Four factors outweigh the label when you are choosing or evaluating mobile proxies.

The carrier. Different carriers have different address pools, different NAT behaviour and different routing. A carrier with well-maintained infrastructure produces more stable sessions than one whose network is congested.

The route. The path from your client to the exit peer, and from that peer to the target, determines most of your observed latency. A direct path on 4G can beat a circuitous path on 5G.

Concurrent load on the address. Because carrier addresses are shared, performance depends on what other users of that address are doing. This is the mechanism in Carrier-Grade NAT and Mobile Proxies.

Session stability. Whether the address holds for the duration of your flow matters more than raw speed for anything stateful.

A 5G label on a congested carrier is worth less than 4G on a well-run one.

What to measure instead

Do not select on the generation. Measure the things that affect your work:

  • Latency, specifically time to first byte through the proxy rather than a ping to a gateway.
  • Success rate against your actual targets, which is the metric that decides whether a job finishes. The method is in Latency vs Success Rate.
  • Session hold time, meaning how reliably a sticky session keeps its address for your required duration.
  • Address change frequency, which matters if your flow spans several minutes.

Why mobile latency is variable in the first place

Even on a fixed carrier and technology, mobile latency fluctuates more than fixed-line or datacenter connections. Radio conditions change as devices move, cells become congested at peak hours, and carriers manage traffic with their own priorities.

Two practical implications:

Do not set aggressive timeouts. A timeout tuned for datacenter latency will produce false failures on mobile. Give yourself headroom and retry on timeout rather than treating it as a block.

Account for time of day. Performance varies with local network load, so a benchmark run at 3am may not represent 8pm. Sample across the day if your job runs continuously.

Choosing between mobile options

When comparing providers or plans, ask about:

  • Which carriers are available in your target markets.
  • Whether sessions can be held for the duration your flow needs.
  • How addresses are allocated and how often they change.
  • Concurrency limits per address.
  • Whether the addresses are genuinely carrier-issued, which you can verify with IP lookup.

Those answers predict your outcomes far better than a generation claim.

Getting started

Run a pilot against your real target rather than a demo page. Confirm the exit IP, measure the added latency, and check that a session holds across the steps your flow needs.
