Residential and mobile proxies both trace back to real consumer connections, which is why both are trusted far more than datacenter IPs. The difference is the kind of connection: a home broadband line versus a cellular carrier.
That difference drives cost, speed and trust, and it decides which one you should buy.
The core distinction
Residential proxies exit through home internet connections. The IP belongs to a consumer ISP, usually a fixed line at a house or apartment.
Mobile proxies exit through cellular networks. The IP belongs to a carrier, and on most carriers it is shared among many devices behind carrier-grade NAT. One public address can serve thousands of real phones at once.
That sharing is the key. A defender cannot block a carrier IP without cutting off a large number of genuine customers on that network, so mobile IPs tend to sail past checks that stop both datacenter and residential addresses.

Two notes on the table.
Latency on mobile depends heavily on the carrier and the route, not just on the generation label. A 4G line with a good path can beat a 5G line with a congested one. Test before you standardise.
IP stability on mobile is partly outside your control. Because the carrier shares and reassigns addresses, an IP can change underneath you. Sticky sessions help, which is why we treat session handling as a first-class feature.
Choosing by workload
- Bulk price, catalogue or availability collection. Residential. You need volume and reasonable cost, and most retail pages are handled fine by residential IPs.

The cost question
Mobile is the most expensive IP type, so it pays to be deliberate about where you spend it. A common and sensible pattern is to monitor broadly on residential IPs and switch to mobile only for the actions that need maximum trust, such as a final checkout step or a login on a high-value account.
