Checking and Fixing a Reddit Shadowban

Reddit's shadowban is the subtlest version of the pattern. Your comments and posts submit without error, they appear to you, and no one else sees them. There is no notification, and the account continues to look healthy from the inside.

For a brand or community account this is worse than a visible ban, because weeks of activity can go nowhere without anyone noticing.

How to detect it

Four checks, from quickest to most conclusive.

Logged-out profile view. Open your profile URL in a browser that is not signed in. A shadowbanned account's profile often shows an error or an empty listing, while a healthy one renders normally.

Second-account visibility. From an account that does not follow you and has no interaction history with you, look at your most recent comment in a public thread. If it is not there, the content is being filtered.

Comment count mismatch. Open a thread where you commented and compare the comment counter with the number of comments actually displayed. A gap of one, on a thread where you know you commented, is a strong signal.

Moderator question. Subreddit moderators can see filtered and removed items in their queues. Asking a moderator whether your comments are landing answers the question directly, provided the subreddit is one where you have a relationship.

Run the checks from a separate profile and address. Checking your own visibility while signed in to the same account, on the same connection, tells you nothing.

What triggers it

Reddit's spam filtering is automated and its triggers overlap heavily with the ones on other platforms.

Link patterns. A high link-to-comment ratio, or the same domain repeated across subreddits, is the most common cause for marketing and brand accounts. Self-promotion rules in many subreddits reinforce this: even an account that is not shadowbanned site-wide may have its links filtered in a community.

New-account velocity. A fresh account that posts or comments frequently in its first days, across many subreddits, looks like spam regardless of content.

Shared address. Accounts that post from the same address in coordination get correlated, and a flagged address takes its accounts with it. The mechanism is described in Why Residential IPs Are Trusted.

Coordinated voting. Voting from several accounts on the same content, or asking others to, is both detectable and a policy violation.

Automation. Posting or commenting via scripts, or through clients that generate requests at machine speed.

The appeal path

Reddit has a dedicated appeal form for shadowbanned accounts, reachable from the account's help page. The form asks for a short explanation, and the effective entries are specific.

What to include:

• What you observed, with the exact checks that failed.
• Dates and examples.
• What you changed, if the cause was behavioural or infrastructure-related.

What not to include: a complaint about reach, an argument that engagement is unfair, or a claim that you did nothing wrong without describing what you observed.

If the account is a brand or client account, appeal once, then fix the cause. A second appeal for the same account without a change in circumstances is unlikely to succeed.

Hygiene for legitimate accounts

The habits that keep a brand account visible on Reddit are stricter than on other platforms, because self-promotion is policed per subreddit as well as site-wide.

• Read the subreddit's rules before posting. Many restrict promotional links entirely, or limit them to specific threads.
• Contribute before you promote. A history of on-topic comments without links changes how an account's links are treated.
• Vary comment length and timing. Do not post in bursts.
• One account, one address. Keep the account on a stable consumer-range address, which for community work means residential or mobile per Mobile Proxies for Social Media.
• No coordinated voting. Not from your own accounts, and not by asking others.
• No automation on the posting path.

If you run several accounts

Agency and brand work often means more than one Reddit account, and the linkage rules are the same as elsewhere. Separate profiles, separate stable addresses, separate recovery details, and no shared activity patterns.
