Checking and Fixing an X/Twitter Shadowban

A shadowban is a quiet reduction in reach. Your posts still publish, you can still log in, and there is no notification. The only symptom is that engagement drops and people who do not follow you cannot find your content in search or replies.

The first job is to establish what is actually happening. Reach problems have several causes and only one of them is a shadowban.

Test before you assume

Three checks, in order.

Search visibility from a logged-out session. Search your exact handle and a distinctive phrase from a recent post from a browser that is not signed in to any account. If your profile and posts do not appear where they did before, visibility is reduced. Testing while logged in does not work, because search results are personalised to your own following graph.

Reply visibility. Post a reply to an account that is not your own from a second account that does not follow you. If the reply is not visible to that second account, replies are being filtered.

Compare against a control. Check a similar account you do not control. If it appears and yours does not, the difference is about your account rather than about search being broken that day.

Causes, ranked

Reach reductions usually come from one of five sources.

Automation. Third-party scripts posting on your behalf, or a client that generates requests at machine speed. This is the most common cause for accounts that were previously fine.

Mass or repeated actions. Following and unfollowing in bulk, posting identical text across accounts, or aggressive replying in a short window.

Shared address with other accounts. Platforms correlate the account and the network. If an address in a range has a history of spam, accounts on it pay, which is the pattern behind Why Residential IPs Are Trusted.

Content reports. Repeated user reports on posts reduce distribution before any policy review completes.

Link patterns. Repeating the same link, or posting a high ratio of links to other content, is a spam signal independent of the link's destination.

The infrastructure causes are the ones you can fix directly.

What to fix first

Work through these in order, because the cheapest fixes are also the most likely.

Remove automation. Any third-party app that posts, follows or replies on your behalf. Revoke access in the platform's connected-applications settings.
Give the account its own stable address. If the account shares a connection with others, especially a datacenter or shared hosting range, move it to a dedicated consumer-range address and hold it. The account and the address should be a stable pair.
Stop bulk actions for at least a week. No follow campaigns, no bulk unfollow, no repeated identical replies.
Vary posting patterns. Varying content and timing is ordinary editorial practice, and it also reduces the pattern match.
Reduce link concentration. Not every post should carry a link.

None of the infrastructure steps work as a disguise. They remove the accidental correlation that a legitimate account has picked up from sharing space with unrelated activity.

The appeal path

If the checks above confirm reduced visibility and your own actions were clean, use the platform's in-product support flow and describe the symptom concretely: search visibility for a logged-out session, replies not visible to non-followers, with dates and specific posts as examples.

Two practical notes. First, appeals that read as a complaint about engagement rather than a description of a technical symptom are less likely to be actioned. Second, fix the infrastructure before appealing, because a reinstated account that is still on a flagged shared address returns to the same state within days.

No third-party automation on the publishing path.
One account, one stable consumer-range address.
Human pacing, with bursts and idle time rather than a constant rate.
Separate recovery details from any other account you run.
No bulk follow or reply campaigns.
