What Are Datacenter Proxies?

Datacenter proxies are the fastest and cheapest IP type, and the easiest for defenders to spot. Where they still make sense and how to get more from them.

A datacenter proxy uses an IP address allocated to a hosting provider or cloud company. The traffic originates from a server, not from a home connection or a phone, and that fact is visible to any site that inspects the network.

It is the cheapest and usually the fastest option, and it is also the easiest to classify as automation. Whether it is the right choice depends entirely on how much the target cares.

Where the addresses come from

Hosting providers and cloud platforms hold large blocks of addresses, announced under their own ASNs. Because those ranges are small in number, well documented and publicly mapped, defenders can identify them reliably. A request from a hosting ASN arrives with a label attached.

Where datacenter proxies are the right tool

High-volume public data. If a site does not defend itself aggressively, datacenter addresses will fetch it at the lowest cost. Confirm with a sample rather than assuming.

Latency-sensitive work. Datacenter connections are stable and fast, without the variability of consumer or carrier routes. For tasks where response time is the binding constraint, this matters.

Internal and testing work. Staging environments, load tests against your own systems, and QA checks where trust is irrelevant.

Targets that rate limit only. A site that throttles per IP without classifying ASNs can be handled with rotation across a datacenter pool at a fraction of the cost of residential.

That last case is more common than people expect. Not every rate limit is a bot defence, and testing will tell you which one you are facing.

Where they fail

Defended consumer sites. Retail, search engines, social platforms and anything with serious bot management will classify hosting ranges. This is not a tuning problem; it is the address type.

Location-sensitive content. A datacenter IP does not represent a real consumer location, so a geo-targeted check from one may return the wrong result or a blocked page.

Anything requiring a consumer identity. Account work, fraud-sensitive flows and personalisation-dependent checks all need an address that plausibly belongs to a person.

Getting more out of a datacenter pool

If you are using datacenter addresses, these habits extend their useful life:

Honest headers. Do not claim to be a browser you are not. Mismatched headers are an independent signal, covered in How Anti-Bot Systems Detect Scrapers.

Modest concurrency per IP. One request at a time per address, with parallelism coming from more addresses.

Pacing. Machine-regular timing is a pattern. Jitter your intervals.

Rotation with cooldowns. Retire an address when it starts failing rather than retrying it indefinitely. The pool pattern is in What Is a Proxy Pool.

Escalate deliberately. When a target starts refusing datacenter addresses, move that workload to residential rather than throwing more datacenter IPs at it. More addresses will not fix an ASN-level block.

The cost argument, done properly

Datacenter proxies win on price per gigabyte. They do not automatically win on cost per successful page, because a cheap request that fails costs bandwidth, time and retries while returning nothing.

Before standardising on datacenter, measure the success rate on your actual targets. The method is in Latency vs Success Rate. If a target accepts datacenter requests, you have found a genuine saving. If it does not, the saving is illusory.

Verifying what you have
