Datacenter vs Residential vs Mobile Proxies

A single reference for the three main proxy types: how each is sourced, how they compare on trust, speed and cost, and which one wins for a given job.

Most proxy decisions come down to picking between three IP types. They are not interchangeable, and the cheapest one is rarely the right one for a defended target. This is the reference we point people to when they ask which type to buy.

Read the table as a starting point, not a verdict. The two rows that decide most outcomes are trust and cost, and they trade off against each other.

Datacenter proxies

Hosting-provider IPs are cheap, fast and plentiful. Their weakness is that hosting ASNs are small and well documented, so anti-bot systems classify them as automation almost by default.

They still earn their place. For high-volume collection of public data that is not heavily defended, for latency-sensitive tasks, and for internal testing, they are the economical choice. The way to get more out of them is discipline: honest headers, sensible concurrency, and rotation so no single IP becomes the pattern. If a target starts refusing them, that is your signal to move up a tier.

Residential proxies

Residential IPs belong to real consumer connections. Because consumer ISP ranges are vast and constantly reassigned, blocking them wholesale is impractical, which is why they pass far more trust checks.

They are the workhorse for retail, search, real-estate and travel data, and for anything where the displayed content depends on where the visitor appears to be. Mobile proxies

Carrier IPs carry the strongest reputation, because one address is shared by many real devices behind carrier-grade NAT. Blocking it means blocking genuine customers, so defenders are reluctant to do it.

The cost is the highest of the three, and latency can vary with the carrier and route. That makes mobile a specialist tool: account management, high-friction checkouts, and targets where both datacenter and residential addresses are refused. Picking by job

A short decision list:

  1. Is the target lightly defended and public? Start with datacenter, measure the success rate, and only escalate if it fails.
  2. Is the target defended, or does the content change by location? Residential.
  3. Does the task involve a logged-in identity or a hardened checkout? Mobile, with a stable session.
  4. Is the workload a mix? Split it. Use the cheapest type that succeeds for each portion rather than a single type for everything.

That last point is the most useful habit. Cost per successful page is the metric, not cost per gigabyte. A datacenter IP that fails half the time is not cheap.

Verifying before you commit

Whatever you choose, test against the actual target rather than a demo page. Run a small sample, record success rate and latency, and confirm the exit IP is where you expect.
