What Are Residential Proxies?

Residential proxies route through real consumer connections, making them trusted but pricier than datacenter IPs. How they work and when to use them.

A residential proxy routes your request through an IP address assigned to a consumer internet connection. From the destination's point of view, the request looks like it came from somebody's home broadband, not from a server.

That is the whole value proposition, and it explains both why residential proxies work so well on defended sites and why they cost more than datacenter addresses.

Why the connection type matters

Anti-bot systems classify incoming requests partly by the network the IP belongs to. Hosting providers announce their own ranges, and those ranges are small, well documented and easy to recognise. Consumer ISPs announce much larger and more fluid ranges, because they change constantly as customers join, move and churn.

Blocking a hosting range is cheap. Blocking a consumer ISP range means blocking real customers. That asymmetry is why residential IPs pass checks that stop datacenter addresses, and it is the foundation of the comparison in Residential vs Datacenter Proxies.

How they differ from datacenter and mobile

  • Versus datacenter. Residential is slower and more expensive, but far more trusted. Datacenter wins on speed and cost for undefended targets.
  • Versus mobile. Residential is cheaper and more predictable. Mobile carries even higher trust because carrier IPs are shared among many real devices, which we explain in Why Mobile IPs Carry the Highest Trust.

The three-way overview is in Datacenter vs Residential vs Mobile Proxies.

The two usage modes

Residential proxies are available in two shapes, and choosing correctly matters more than most buying decisions.

Rotating. The exit IP changes per request or per session, drawn from the pool. This is the mode for bulk collection, where each request stands alone and breadth is the point.

Static or sticky. One IP is held for a session or longer, which is required for any flow with state. We cover the trade-off in Static vs Rotating Residential Proxies.

Most real workloads use both modes in sequence. A typical price monitoring job discovers pages on rotation and then holds a session for any detailed check that depends on continuity.

What to look for in a provider

Pool size is the number everyone advertises and the one that tells you the least. The questions that actually predict performance are:

  • How many distinct networks are represented in my target markets?
  • Is the pool filtered for abuse history and blocklists, or is the raw count passed through?
  • How is the pool sourced, and is the consent model documented?
  • What are the concurrency limits and session maximums?

We expand on these in How to Choose a Proxy Provider, and the sourcing question specifically in Residential Proxy Sourcing and Consent. Our own view on why filtering beats volume is in How Proxy Networks Are Built.

Typical use cases

Residential proxies are the default choice for work where the destination cares who you are:

  • Price and assortment monitoring across markets.
  • Search engine result checks that need a local vantage point.
  • Market research and competitive intelligence.
  • Travel fare and availability comparison.
  • Real estate listing collection.
  • Brand and map enforcement checks.

Each of these gets a fuller treatment in its own post, starting with Residential Proxy Use Cases.

What residential proxies do not fix

Two honest caveats.

First, they do not make bad behaviour invisible. Honest headers, sane concurrency and request pacing still matter, and a residential IP used carelessly will get challenged. The signals are listed in How Anti-Bot Systems Detect Scrapers.

Second, they are not a licence. Where a site's terms prohibit collection, or where the data is personal, an IP type does not change the legal picture. We summarise the landscape in Is Web Scraping Legal.

Getting started

The LightningBytes residential line offers country, state and city targeting with automatic sticky sessions and pre-filtered IPs. The residential page has the current packages and coverage, and the proxy checker will confirm exit IP and latency before you build anything. If you want to compare against carrier addresses first, read Residential vs Mobile Proxies.
